Bathed in the cool tones of the afternoon air, these images exude a sense of tranquility and nostalgia. Castañeda’s mastery of his medium is exemplified in this 1957 watercolor painting, which illustrates the Filipinos’ enduring close familial relationships and respect for the elderly. Unlike his usual cool-toned landscapes, the artist rendered this piece in warmer tones, enhancing the heartfelt warmth that emanates from the scene.

Aside from being an artist, Castañeda was also a formidable mentor who taught and inspired many aspiring artists, including several would-be prominent Filipino artists. He may have left only a few paintings, but his knowledge and teachings were perpetually ingrained in his students’ lives and works.
