Contrary to his usual countryside landscapes characterized by verdant foliage, clear skies, and sunlight, where you can almost feel the cold breeze and hear the cicadas in the background due to the scenery’s peacefulness, Manansala’s Urban Landscape offers a view looming with tall buildings, construction sites, and electric lines. Devoid of his revered transparent cubism and polychromatic hues, this painting is made with watercolor, haphazardly layered upon each other, which creates a slightly hazy atmosphere. This piece gives an impression of someone observing the city from the fields, as if watching how the tranquil countryside slowly transitions into the hustling and bustling city we know today.

A significant figure in Philippine art history, Manansala’s ability to impress the local and international art scenes with his diverse masterpieces is a testament to his enduring artistic legacy. Shortly after he died in 1981, Vicente Manansala was posthumously named a National Artist for Painting.
