Quickly gaining his rank as one of the country’s rising artists during his college years, his works often surround themes in the magic realist realm, combining myth with reality in the same space. This particular work takes on what critic V.I.S. de Verya calls Marcel’s “blue funk erotica.” In no discernible pattern, Marcel interconnects three figures in various positions. The most prominent of his figures is the woman at the center, naked except for black underwear. She holds a phone to her ear, and she has a hand between her breasts. Beneath her stand the two men, kneeling. Indeed, Marcel Antonio’s works are a masterclass of the expressive and non-literary tradition of storytelling, playful in its pursuit of a narrative.
