Paras-Perez wrote:\n“Edades’ choice of scenes bereft of any attempt to ‘prettify’\nshowed the way to a new world. Edades opened the door\nto Modernist Art in the Philippines and did not close it\nafterward. In the process of opening that door, his ideas also\nchanged the tone of art discourse in the country—perhaps\nwith more far-reaching effect than is easily perceived.”\nEdades’ studies in the U.S. and exposure to European\nmodern art influenced his craft that is not inclined\ntoward idyllic subject matters and presenting refined\ndetailing. He paved the way for generations of Filipino\nartists who utilize modernist approaches to artmaking.\nAfter Edades retired from the University of Santo\nTomas, where he served as the dean of its architecture\ndepartment and taught painting, he settled with his\nwife, Jean, in Davao during the late 1960s. This 1981\nlandscape piece further reveals his fruitful efforts to\ngo beyond the standards of the classical tradition of\npainting.
