Abstract yet recognizable, this masterpiece of a sculpture delivers the same raw and expressive energy that the original legends have carried throughout time.

Created around 1985, this piece depicts a woman figure bowing as if she's embarrassed while riding a horse. Made of welded brass, it produces sharp, angular, jagged lines that convey fragility and strength that accurately fit the subject figure it supposedly represents.

For context, the legend of Lady Godiva refers to a noblewoman who rode on horseback fully naked through Coventry to protest oppressive taxes that her husband had implemented. The old tale had become an inspiring story about defiance and moral strength—a woman challenging injustice through vulnerability. Risking her own dignity as a sacrifice for the good of the many.

Going back to the piece, Saprid had perfectly captured that same resilience and timelessness through the metallic sheen of the sculpture. The angular and fragmented appearance of the piece reflects the delicate yet powerful nature that Lady Godiva is said to possess. Unlike many beautiful and artistic representations and renditions of the Lady in the grand field of visual arts, what makes Saprid's masterpiece truly interesting is the way he brought the subject to life.

By creating a fragmented, raw figure rather than a delicate, beautiful physicality of a naked highborn woman riding a horse, The artist had literally stripped down the lady of its sensuality down to her naked spirituality. Thereby exposing a figure fueled by inner strength and moral conviction, it further redefines it as a symbol of resistance rather than mere beauty.

Through welding rough metals, Solomon Saprid reflected the harsh realities of standing up against power. Transforming a medieval legend into a timeless statement of resistance and integrity.
