COLLECTION","coa":null,"provenance":"Bohol","exhibited":null,"literature":null,"write_up":"The second specimen is a folk image of the Inmaculada Concepción which can stylistically be attributed to the Bohol school of carving. It must be recalled that the Jesuits introduced the devotion to the Inmaculada Concepción in Bohol upon their arrival in the island in 1595. <br><br> The piece can be conservatively dated to the late 18th to the early 19th century. Its open cape contradistinguished from the “Hebrea” type associated with the Dauis workshops in Panglao Island and the “bell” or the “Candelaria” type from the interior towns of Bohol—suggests that this could be a folk replica of the cult image of the Inmaculada Concepción de Baclayon in the retablo mayor of the Baclayon Church (1737). <br><br> The head and the hands of this specimen are made of ivory, but interestingly carved with charming primitiveness for which Bohol santos are known for. The santo is 22 inches which is bigger than the usual Bohol table-top santos that range between 12-14 inches. Also, the base uniquely has five cherubs—instead of the usual three—which is much desired by collectors.
