It also has an ivory head and hands carved in the 18th century style, attached to a body dressed in a bulbous European court dress with a bodice. Some collectors would also call this type “buntis” alluding to a pregnant Mary supposedly carrying Jesus on her womb. Regardless, the piece is striking and imposing in person due to its height of almost 26 inches, which is again unusually large for a Visayan bell-shaped virgin. Another outstanding feature of this piece is its vibrant and well-preserved original encarna or paint, untouched and uncleaned. The skirt is also adorned with a relief of flowers and foliage that run from the central panel to the hem of the skirt, which are not often seen. Bell-shaped virgins are often the most desired not only because of their compelling form, but for their heft and bulk. Thus, since the early days of collecting they are sought after and are often sold at a premium. <br><br> All of these rare and exceptional specimens represent Don Geny Lopez’ good taste and exacting standards.
