Painted in 2015, this masterpiece uses exaggerated and dreamlike figures as well as theatrical composition to create a satirical yet poignant commentary on Filipino Identity in the age of globalization. Along the surface, the composition illustrates an image of two central figures sitting on a carabao—a Filipino symbol primarily associated with rural life and hard labor. One of the distinctive symbologies found in the piece is the depiction of a foreign man and a local Filipino woman. The way the latter is wearing a \"doll face\" suggests the loss of individuality, as if the person has been wearing synthetic faces, essentially trying to become mannequins that fit into a society they try to belong to. The foreign man, on the other hand, who's carrying a miniature house, seems to represent dreams of stability, family, and ownership found in the palms of the foreign land. Upon delving deeper into the piece, Guerrero Habulan has done a magnificent job of revealing the issue of Filipino identity and the tensions between traditions and modernity, labor and leisure, and authenticity and imitation. The whole canvas mirrors an image of a society riding its own carabao—definitely moving forward but unfathomably burdened by the weight of colonial influences and the lure of modern temptations.
