Still abstract in composition, his once large-scale canvases filled with bold sweeps of brush and color morphed into inked fine lines and basic shapes in a restrained palette. This shift in his style, from loud and dynamic to quiet and still, introduced a new form of expression that was more subdued and introspective, which piqued the interest of art enthusiasts. This pursuit of simplicity became the catalyst for Joya's 1967 exhibition at the Luz Gallery. Here, he unveiled a collection of pen-and-ink abstract drawings, a novel facet of his oeuvre. These drawings demonstrate the artist's ability to yield different tonal intensities by layering his strokes and scribbles, as well as the ingenious placement and spacing of his lines. Joya's 1968 Abstract Drawing showcases his growing penchant for minimalism, a trend that would remain in his works in the years to come.
