On his website, quoting Cid Reyes’s monograph Romulo Olazo, the Untitled Series was described as: “Bold, broad swathes of pure black pigment, sliding upon the surface and space, and colliding in a salvo of angular intersection [...] In these works, colors play a secondary role: a chromatic chorus to the black aria.”

This Untitled #187, created a few years after the New Works exhibit, echoes that operatic aria of colors this series conveys. With his previous series, Diaphanous, gaining awards from both local and international stages, his Untitled series is likely a result of both his wish to take his artistry to the next level and prevent creative stagnation as a result of a continued patronage of the subject matter.

Indeed, Untitled #187 preserves Diaphanous’s irregular and irreverent brush strokes but strips them of their usual gossamer shine, leaving the works more opaque than Diaphanous. In the same book, Reyes eloquently describes the beauty of the Untitled Series the best, stating that: “Clearly, the Untitled works, by their sheer appellation, constituted Olazo’s experimental stage. The Diaphanous, after all, had already been cast as the artist’s classic image [...] He decided to take it to a new dimension, a higher ether. The Untitled works are Olazo’s cathartic records of that wrestling convulsion. Some regarded the Untitled works as a betrayal of the Diaphanous. Others viewed them as a resuscitation of a flagging theme. Still, to some, Olazo was perceived as an artist in transition.” (Hannah Valiente)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":600000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":600000,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":720960,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":63766,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/147.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":63836,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/147c.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":63831,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/147b.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":63829,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/147a.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":146,"next":148,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
