Debuting in his 1983 solo exhibition New Works at The Luz Gallery, these pieces represented a turning point after the acclaim of his Diaphanous Series. As noted by Patricia Tria Olazo in Cid Reyes’ monograph on the artist, “Olazo’s paintings take an opaque quality with the use of mixed media, acrylic, and oil on canvas”—a statement that captures the artist’s departure from the ethereal luminosity of his earlier works toward a more material and tactile visual language.

In Untitled #208, this shift is rendered with remarkable control and emotional depth. The work eschews the diaphanous transparency that once defined Olazo’s painterly signature, replacing it with opacity, density, and an almost architectural balance of form. Earthy pigments anchor the composition, while gestural sweeps of line and texture cut through the surface with both spontaneity and deliberation. There is an implicit rhythm in the interplay of shape and void, as if the artist is orchestrating a dialogue between concealment and revelation. Here, abstraction becomes not an escape from form, but a confrontation with it—asserting volume, depth, and substance without forsaking the lyrical grace that characterizes Olazo’s hand.
