With the most accepted version being the Creation God Bathala ordering the creation of a bamboo stalk that grew and split open to release the first ancestors of all humanity, Leonardo Tayao Cruz's piece showcases a magnificent scene that captures the exact brilliance and beauty of one of the Philippines' most essential folklores.

Created in 1999, Cruz's oeuvre captures the exact moment when the bamboo splits, giving birth to a well-built man named Malakas, or \"Strong,\" due to his muscular physique, and a slender, graceful woman named Maganda, or \"beautiful,\" referring to her beauty. The piece also captures a bird commonly recognized as Amihan, who was ordered by the creation god Bathala to create a bamboo stalk after he brought sunlight to dispel the darkness.

The world inside the canvas celebrates the birth of life through incredible illustration. The lush color palette of nature gives the piece a raw and magnificent life, fitting the creation myth the artist is trying to depict. Leonardo Tayao Cruz's Si Malakas at SI Maganda highlights the beauty of myths and folklore that are uniquely ours—a story that reflects Filipino's identity, culture, and heritage transferred from traditional storytelling to canvases and brushstrokes.
