At nineteen years old, he enrolled at the UP School of Fine Arts as a special student, marking the first time he would undertake formal training in the arts. Before this, he had only studied under Alejandro Celis’ tutelage, an artist peddling his religious paintings to the Sansó family and one of the first few graduates of UP School of Fine Arts.

Born in Spain as a Catalan and raised in the Philippines, Sansó’s life is tethered between two opposing choices: Fairskinned in a predominantly dark country, his attraction for the arts also separated him from his family.

In Alfredo Roces’ Sansó, he wrote: “His family expected him to outgrow or tire of his dabbling with drawing, become more serious, and help in the family business.” Eventually, he managed to persuade his family to excuse him from reporting full-time at their family show to formally study.

Sansó’s bout at UP saw a multitude of talented teachers to gain knowledge from. Dominador Castañeda taught pastels and oil, while Irineo Miranda taught about the dexterity of watercolor and the beauty of the bravura style.

However, there is no greater influence for him than Fernando Amorsolo, who was the director of the art department at the time. Though not his professor at the time, Amorsolo was one of Sanso’s greatest influences. He wanted to paint like the maestro.

This Landscape was created at the height of Sanso’s UP school days. In vivid greens and sunny yellows, Amorsolo’s sway in this piece is evident in Sanso’s handling of his light and shadows. It echoes a countryside untouched by the war that has ravaged every corner of the country, a reprieve from a place that is trying to build itself from the ground up again.

Three years after this landscape’s creation, Sanso would find himself at yet another crossroads in his career, aboard a steamer for Europe in his pursuit of a career in the arts.
