From the mangled Christ on the cross to the Pieta, these kinds of subject matters are not new in his oeuvre, as befits an artist of such caliber.

Rosary Queen follows the same religious imagery that has long been central in his portfolio. For many devout Catholics, the Virgin Mary is central in their prayers, a mediator between believers and God. Her role as an intercessor is even more prominent in one of the most well-known prayers in the Catholic Church, the Rosary.

Ang’s Rosary Queen brings a Filipino twist to Mother Mary. Under his masterful modernist hands, he transforms Mary into his standard Cubist vernacular, using lush greens and vivid reds in his deconstruction of her eternal image. In her edges, Ang’s Mary steps away from her usual holy portrayal and into her flesh-and-blood counterpart. With her heart obvious and dramatized, the harshness of Ang’s works gave way to the humanization of such a looming figure, making Mary less mythical and just as human.
