During this period, he would frequent an art studio on Dimasalang St. in Sampaloc, Manila to meet with other artists. Together, they would traverse the streets of Manila and the outskirts of town to observe and practice painting in plein air. This method, first introduced to him by his uncle and mentor, Martino Abellana, allowed him to observe his subjects directly and paint scenes in their natural light. <br /> <br />Painted in 1970, Sunset was one of Galicano's illustrations during his Dimasalang period. It features a tranquil lake, with a group of people aboard a boat, contentedly lounging and chatting amongst themselves as they bask in the last rays of the sun before it disappears completely on the horizon. In contrast to the generally dark scenery, the artist painted the sky in bright yellow and orange, with a hint of blue, casting a faint light across the entire image. Undeniably, Galicano's masterful strokes and dazzling palette breathe life into the scenes he portrays. <br /> <br />Aside from being an early Romulo Galicano work, the work at hand was also one of the few paintings he signed with \"Gali.\" This moniker was what Emilio ‘Abe’ Aguilar Cruz (cofounder of the Dimasalang group) suggested he use for his paintings at that time, in preparation for his professional career as a painter. It was so limited in number that even the artist himself had only a single piece in his trove marked as \"Gali.\" Furthermore, beyond their aesthetic appeal, the rarity of these pieces made them among the artist's most coveted works, establishing them as a unique and exclusive part of his artistic journey.
