All of his experiences, both good and bad, his studies, and his exposure to different art styles in the Philippines and abroad contributed to Sansó's growth as an artist. However, his gradual ascent to the art scene is a product of his unwavering dedication and exceptional talent. Even amid the prevailing styles and techniques of his time, he single-mindedly worked towards his own figurative approach. There is not a single artist Sansó wished to imitate, even in his earlier days. In an interview with Cid Reyes, Sansó even questioned the need to use a parallel and imitate other artists' voices when he has his own. <br /> <br />Each of Sansó's canvases is unique in its own way. Despite the recurring themes and elements, one is never a copy of the other. \"I like the nervous feeling when you're creating a painting from nothing but your imagination and instinct,\" he told Reyes. Still, Sansó's ability to shroud his subjects in mystery remains a constant aspect of his art. His flora, landscape, and seascape themes, while often exuding a sense of solitude and tranquility, are distorted into a surrealistic portrayal of the physical world. <br /> <br />Calm yet haunting, That Nightly Hour is a striking example of how Sansó's works serve as a gateway to an otherworldly realm. It exemplifies his ability to evoke a sense of peace and mystery through his skilled brushwork and use of color. In this 1965 piece, the artist portrays a night scene by the coast. The sun has set, the stars are slowly painting the dimming sky, while the moon casts a soft glow that illuminates the whole scenery. Despite the scene's stillness, the artist's blue-dominated palette and dark shadows exude an eerie atmosphere, as if a looming presence hidden in obscurity waits for the perfect moment to strike. <br /> <br />Cleveland Museum curator Louise S. Richards also noted the ominous feeling brought by Sansó's works. Describing what a tour in the artist's 1964 Cleveland Museum exhibition feels like, Richards said: \"[It] shows the world as a limbo hovering between day and night where living creatures do not exist but inanimate objects become prime actors.\" She further discussed the characteristics of his landscapes by saying, \"...shadowy rocks and bushes have a watchful presence neither evil nor beneficent but alien to our everyday experience of stone and wood.\" <br /> <br />Juvenal Sansó's unique approach to his artmaking enabled him to develop a style distinctly his own, resulting in a trove of beguiling masterpieces that contributed to his significance in the art world.
