The irony of the piece then comes in the form of a juxtaposed backdrop behind the shanties, where an urban structure labeled \"peace hotel\" creates disparity between the miserable condition of the settlement and the \"life-saving\" slogan.

Delving further into the artist's intended irony, the way the artwork seems to draw the eye to the \"peaceful\" slogan. At the same time, the ramshackle dwellings scream in the periphery and provide a subtle social commentary on disparity, as the meaning of the word 'piece' seems ironic when set against the precarious illustration of the impoverished home. This painting, therefore, reveals the artist's awareness of urban struggles—a theme that would evolve into his later oeuvre, resulting in more emotional, expressionist depictions of suffering and human sacrifice.
