In “Harana”, one sees a young man strumming his guitar to express his admiration for the young lady who is the central figure in this composition. <br /><br />As a footnote, Galicano cleverly composed the quiet yet well outlined and well thought out positioning of the three protagonists. The models for the protagonists are members of Galicano’s own family. The young swain is Galicano’s painter son, Jonathan. The central figure of the lady he is serenading who is fanning herself with a Spanish “abanico” and dressed in a beautifully executed Filipiniana attire designed by renowned couturier Patis Tesoro is Galicano’s daughter in-law. A third personality, discreetly peering through the curtains and observing attentively at what is happening between the young couple at the left of the central figure is presumably the lass’ mother. <br /><br />Galicano’s “Harana” departs from the usual depiction of a serenade which usually takes place in the courtyard where a group of young men serenade a young woman who is usually looking down from her “pasamano de ventana” . This particular interpretation is more intimate and private ensuing within the interiors of a well appointed bourgeois home. Galicano’s treatment of this lovely setting is enviable as it exudes an ambiance prevalently nostalgic and pleasant to the visual senses. He created an atmosphere where light and shadow harmoniously play and is lifted by his textured brushstrokes. . <br /><br />The play of light is masterfully complemented by the careful choice of colors that gives a hint of the tasteful aesthetic preponderance of the artist. The artist’s philosophy of abstraction manifests itself in the thin vertical line that populates most of his compositions. <br /><br />Galicano is a well read artist and he applies learned concepts throughout his work. He is a very passionate painter inspired and influenced by academic artists such as Juan Luna, Mariano Fortuny, Joaquin Sorolla and the American, John Singer Sargent. <br /><br />Galicano remains a towering and significant influence on Philippine art., representing the potential of tradition with innovation.
