Quezon to his wife Doña Aurora pulls back the curtain on their marriage — and has the president speak out on his own behalf on the various charges of illicit affairs made against him.

“Please don't doubt me,” Quezon pleads. “My love has never changed from the first day I have realized that I was in love with you. I have my weakness as you know, but dear it's all superficial …

“And you know also that accepting the case of that bailerina (taxi dancer). My weakness in this respect have (sic) not been serious.”

Quezon would argue that he was completely honest with her, from the beginning of their marriage.

He said, “When you married me, you were frankly informed by me of my shortcomings. I did not want to deceive you by promising something that I could not fulfill.”

The president wrote on, “You have placed (me) sometimes in a position where l thought that it was better that I should not confess to you what I had done that might hurt your feelings.”

The letter details that Doña Aurora had decamped to Baguio without letting him know — causing him embarassment in front of the Palace staff — and despite how this may have hurt him, he chose to forgive her.

On the charge that Doña made that he had an “illicit relation with a girl that was a government pensionada,” Quezon merely answered, “I resented the insinuation.”

He added sharply, “During this last year of my presidency l have grown tremendously. My sense of values has been sharper.. I cannot forget, even in my most private affairs and family relations that certain consideration is due to my office.”

Make no mistake, 1937 was an eventful year for President Quezon and lest it not be said that he did nothing but chase skirts and appease his wife, it was also a wholly productive time for him and the Commonwealth.

Just two weeks earlier, Quezon signed into law the creation of the Institute of the National Language to develop a national language for the Philippines — and to base it on Tagalog.

In the same year, he also guided the Philippines into giving the women the right to vote; saw the establishment of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, and welcomed Jews fleeing the Nazi invasion of Europe.

While the letter reveals a controversial side of Quezon, it also shows his caring and generous side in an atmosphere that he describes as so stressful, that “if l had not been strong perhaps I would have had a nervous breakdown again.”","lot_group":"OBJET D' ARTS","lot_details_html":"
Manuel L.
