Retana, the first biographer of the national hero, this full-size cabinet card photo was taken after Rizal arrived in Madrid in 1890. It was during this period that he received the heartbreaking news of his family’s eviction from Calamba and the wedding of his beloved Leonor Rivera. In a state of depression, Rizal challenged Antonio Luna to a duel over Nellie Boustead. Additionally, outraged by a slanderous report about Calamba, he also challenged his archenemy Retana to a duel, who, aware of the situation, quickly issued a retraction in a newspaper. <br /><br />The photograph, often attributed to the studio’s output during the period of operation by its founder, Edgardo Debas, served as Rizal’s personal favorite and was meant to be the frontispiece for his novel, El Filibusterismo. <br /><br />The portrait shows Rizal in a formal, half-length studio shot, looking straight at the camera with a calm and thoughtful expression typical of late Victorian portraiture. His serious and direct gaze reflects the formal style of the late 19th century, conveying a sense of intellectual seriousness and determination. <br /><br />Rizal wears a dark, high-collared double-breasted overcoat, symbolizing the fashion of a distinguished gentleman of his time.
