Samonte’s interest in printmaking was further nurtured during his frequent visits to the Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) studio workshop at the Philippine Women's University, as well as his time working in several printing and advertising companies. Since then, he dedicated his time to studying and honing his printmaking skills. With his eye-catching, prismatic, geometric forms, Samonte eventually made his presence known in the art scene. His career reached its peak in 1974, the same year he created the work at hand, Rectangular No. 17. From afar, the piece appears to be painted with a harmonious blend of colors before lines are added to form the shapes. But upon closer inspection, one could see that the rectangles were individually colored—proving the artist's mastery of his craft and attention to detail. This work is just one of Rodolfo Samonte's phenomenal serigraphs. Still, it is a striking representation of his talents and skills that earned him the distinction of being one of the pioneering figures of serigraphy in the Philippines.
