While he is best known for his serigraphs or silkscreen prints, Samonte also explored various media and techniques in his artmaking. His oeuvre, regardless of materials used, is marked by its reductive, minimal appearance and a restrained palette. Paper Work 1 is one of Samonte's cast paper reliefs, a testament to his

ingenuity and unwavering dedication to his craft. Despite its seemingly plain and straightforward white, textured finish, this work underwent a painstaking process. This process involves creating paper pulp from torn papers soaked in water, then using a mold to shape the pulp or layering saturated paper strips over a relief form. After molding and shaping to the artist's desired form, he will allow it to dry for several days to weeks before sanding or painting to finish it off.

With a wide range of works, from paintings to woodcuts and prints, Rodolfo Samonte is undoubtedly a well-respected figure in the Philippine art scene. The combination of his proficiency in printmaking and his sensibility towards abstraction established him as one of the most accomplished geometric abstractionists in that field. Throughout his career, he participated in several solo and group exhibitions and received numerous awards and recognitions. The work at hand was created in 1977, three years after Samonte, a lone printmaker among a pool of Filipino painters, represented the Philippines in the ASEAN traveling art exhibition shown in Southeast Asian capitals in 1974.
