Yongde was born and raised in China, and was the son of a well-off Chinese businessman. Veteran writer and journalist Julie Yap-Daza once wrote about Yongde in her column on the November 12, 1965, issue of The Daily Mirror. She wrote, “A self-made man who has been in the Philippines the past four years, having been brought up in China and then Hong Kong, Yongder [sic] cuts a mysterious figure. He talks little, and what few words he cares to drop, either in halting English, or in the most colloquial Chinese, or in poor Tagalog, are rarities.”

By 1965, as Yap-Daza reported, Yongde had been living in the Philippines for four years, with his 100-peso allowance given by his father every month, of which the majority he allocated for his painting. Yongde was a nomad, having no permanent address to call home, and survived gritty Manila by asking friends for lodging.

Yap-Daza's article detailed the exhibition of Yongde's works at the Luz Gallery, together with two other young artists, Luis Romero and the well-known Marciano Galanghard. Yap-Daza further described Yongde's personality in her article, \"Of the three, Yongder [sic] shows the most promise. He is also a young man—in his early 20s—who has an exciting, dynamic personality and \"a certain elegance\" that is stunning, to say the least.” Yongde was discovered by Arturo Luz himself. As YapDaza recounted, Yongde visited the Luz Gallery one day, which by then had become the ground zero of modern art in the Philippines. He then \"plunked down a hundred or more of his works. Luz was impressed, not only by his strong personality, but also by the strength that showed through his collection of 'wild, wild, wild drawings,' lyrical abstractions, and painstakingly made op art arrangements.\" So struck was Luz that he praised Yongde as a rookie artist that “is sure to go places, far and wide.”

Yongde was most known for his op art works, which had been at the Luz Gallery several times. These works, each one painstakingly done in 24 hours, are a hypnotizing blend of trompe l'oeil whimsy and geometric fancy. Yongde's presentations at the Luz Gallery coincided with the international craze for op art, starting with the 1965 exhibition of its major exponents Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, and Carlos Cruz-Diez at New York's Museum of Modern Art, which spurred an international trend for op art styles in fashion, interior design, print and TV ads, and even pop culture, exemplified by the album covers of The Beatles' \"Revolver,\" The Rolling Stones' \"Their Satanic Majesties Request,\" and Pink Floyd's \"Atom Heart Mother.\" (Adrian Maranan)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":60000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":60000,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":72096,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":63713,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/88.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":64127,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/88a.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":64020,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/88e.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":64017,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/88b.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":64014,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/88c.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":64013,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/88d.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[70000,80000,90000,100000,110000,120000,130000,140000,150000,160000,170000,180000,190000,200000,220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":87,"next":89,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
