This town was known for its historic stone houses, made to protect families from the roaming tulisanes, and that withstood the test of time. His formative years in this culture and architecture-rich community had a profound influence on his artistic style. Later, he ventured into the city of Manila, where he earned a degree in Fine Arts from the esteemed University of Santo Tomas, known for producing many distinguished artists and personalities in various fields.

Mercado's illustrious career has yielded a diverse collection of works, ranging from paintings and drawings to relief and freestanding sculptures. He has also created a few functional objects, such as furniture. Still, he was most known for his abstract compositions, heavily influenced by the rich architectural culture of his community in Bustos— structures that are an amalgamation of confinement and connectivity. Conrado Mercado demonstrated exceptional skill and remarkable versatility through his multifarious creations made from aluminum, brass, wood, and concrete.
