It bears the serial or model number 1185M and was most probably a custom order from Steinway & Sons New York.

According to family sources, this Steinway piano was imported from the U.S. and bought by Senator Gil J. Puyat as a gift for his musically-inclined wife, Eugenia Genoveva “Gening” Guidote Puyat. It most probably dates back to the early 1950s at the time the Puyat family moved to their new home at 60 D. Tuason corner Dapitan Sts., Santa Mesa Heights, Quezon City.

It was shortly after Sen. Puyat began his long career in the Senate, spanning most of the years of the Third Republic from 1951-1973. Santa Mesa Heights, developed by Gregorio Araneta, Inc. was called “mansion site,” having been the home of a number of prominent society figures and politicians.

Among the Ilustrados and upper-class families in 19th and 20th century Philippines, “no Filipino man or woman was considered educated without proficiency in at least one musical instrument–and the piano with pedals was a popular choice,” wrote Felice P. Sta. Maria in her book, Halupi. All over the Philippines piano-fever caught many families. According to the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, 2nd edition, pianos from Europe were being imported starting the Spanish colonial period. Among the firms engaged in piano importation were Rafael and Luis Echegoyen’s La Lira Music Store, A. Romanach & Co., Pio Trinidad & Co., Felipe Yupangco, José Oliver Succ. Co., Lyric Music House, Jacinto, and La Estrella del Norte, sole distributor of Steinway pianos in the Philippines.

Perhaps it was their common love for music which brought Gening closer to First Lady Imelda Marcos, who was a former senator’s wife herself. Fresh from Tacloban, Imelda got a music scholarship from Philippine Women’s University with the help of voice teacher, Adoracion Reyes, who was introduced to Imelda by her cousin, Loreto Ramos. Imelda’s other cousin, Congressman Danieling Romualdez, with whom Imelda stayed at his house at 48 Dapitan Street, Santa Mesa Heights, Quezon City, got Imelda a job at P.E. Domingo Music Store in Escolta. As a receptionist-salesgirl, recounted Beatriz Romualdez in her book, Imelda and the Clans, she would do piano demonstrations for customers and would occasionally sing some of the music pieces on sale. Imelda was quite effective in her job and logged up a lot of sales until her disgruntled father found out and promptly got her a job at the Central Bank.

At the time Imelda became First Lady she was a far cry from the piano salesgirl she was when she first arrived in Manila. She was a Patroness of the Arts and had young piano protegés like Cecile Licad and Rowena Arrieta under her wing. She may have once sung a tune or two while attending socials at Gil and Gening’s 60 D. Tuason home, accompanied by music flowing from this very Steinway & Sons New York grand piano. As a token of their friendship, Ferdinand & Imelda Marcos gifted Gening a Patek Philippe lady’s watch which matched the First Couple’s gift to Senator Gil J. Puyat on the occasion of his 60th birthday. And while President Marcos may have reneged on his promise to Senator Gil J. Puyat to give way and allow him to run for President in the 1973 presidential elections by declaring Martial Law, none of the companies under the Puyat group of companies was touched.

Gening passed away on 21 November 1988 at age 81 and her remains interred beside her husband in the Puyat Family Mausoleum in Loyola Memorial Park, Marikina. Inscribed on her tomb was her family’s tribute to Gening: “Most of all a mother.”","lot_group":"OBJET D' ARTS","lot_details_html":"
Steinway & Sons
Steinway Model 'M' Medium Grand Piano
ca.1957
Serial Number: 1185 M
Color: Dark Walnut
with upholstered stool

piano size:
H: 67 1/2\" (172 cm)
L: 61\" (155 cm)
W: 57 1/4\" (145 cm)

piano bench:
H: 18 3/4\" (48 cm)
L: 34 1/2\" (88 cm)
W: 15\" (38 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":650000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":650000,"userBid":null,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":781040,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":63738,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/96.jpg","isFeatured":1},{"id":64022,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/121/155/lot/96a.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":95,"next":97,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
