Born into a farmer’s family in Bulacan in 1939, the subjects of Antonio are mainly of folk genre, from farmers and vendors to mother and child. Heavily influenced by his mentor, Vicente Manansala, Antonio’s works are chromatic masterpieces with geometric and calculated renditions of people and scenes. His subjects are poetically represented in his cubist style and use of vivid festive colors, the most noted of which is a shade of yellow that is almost luminous. An Antonio artwork is popular for portraying scenes from the Filipino way of life, immersing the local themes in rich eloquence and vibrancy in linear clarity, as seen in this 2008 piece.
