Mahilum is also best recognized \nfor his Maria Alimango series which presents the life of Maria (a localized \nversion of Cinderella) created for Gilda Cordero-Fernando Books. He has \na lighthearted approach in depicting folk themes and settings, utilizing \nlighter palettes in his later works. <br /><br />\nThis piece is an exemplification of his familiar “antebellum crowd scenes” \nrendered from a high viewpoint, presenting the festivity of rural life \nthrough charming visualization of a reimagined town scene. Townsfolk \nis presented with distinct activities, from the one in a crowd to the small \ngroups with interacting individuals. It also shows more colors—a more \nvibrant palette—in contrast to Mahilum’s earlier works which feature \ndarker tones. Beyond being an intimate portrayal of the peasant life, the \nartist is able to add character to the folks in an individualized manner of \nstylized portrayal. <br /><br />\nMahilum was employed by billboard and neon sign outdoor advertising \ncompany, Racor, and moved to movie display advertising in 1967, \nproducing kartelon theater display and cinema layouts for print \nadvertisements. In 1969, he established his own movie advertising firm \nwith local and foreign accounts.
