Known as the Father of Modern Philippine Mural Paintings, his pieces feature confident strokes and shading to convey his subject matter.

His watercolor landscape highlights his sensitivity to landscape and environment, providing a very different yet simplified peaceful mood from Francisco’s large cultural and historical murals. The nice balance of color and simple illustration reflects the beauty of stillness and contemplation—solidifying Francisco’s versatility beyond art murals and his mastery of expressing mood through minimal means.

His study piece, on the other hand, is a practice sketch for one of his famous historical murals in 1953, entitled Five Hundred Years of Philippine History. His sketch of Jose Rizal’s execution, together with his conceptual illustration of American soldiers, provides a partial glimpse into his creative process in creating the iconic mural, which visually displays Philippine history as a blueprint for collective memory.
