Its dramatic composition features Peter, wrapped in heavy robes and positioned near a fire—seemingly withdrawn —while inner turmoil and shame are visually conveyed through the subject’s expression. The shadow of a rooster cast by the campfire’s silhouette foreshadows Jesus Christ’s precise prophecy regarding Peter’s actions, where the roosters immediately crowed at his third denial, making the artist’s piece more dramatic. At his core, Leonardo Cruz represents one of the most pivotal characters in the Bible and transforms the narrative into a universal reflection on guilt, conscience, and redemption. It presents Peter—one of the most recognizable apostles of Jesus Christ— as deeply human. Capable of faith and yet still vulnerable to fear, Cruz had managed to reflect the struggles of grief and invite his audiences to reflect on their own moments of weakness.
