While studying and even after he graduated, Pereira worked at advertising and magazine publishing companies as a designer and illustrator, incorporating his fine arts studies into his work. Pereira’s oeuvre is Filipino through and through, evident in his depiction of the Filipina maiden, pastoral landscapes, and genre themes. While these were the prevailing subjects during his time, what distinguishes Pereira’s canvases from those of other artists is his orange-and-pink-infused palette, which bathes his images in a sweeter, brighter light. Mayon Volcano, painted in 1949, not only delineates the majestic features of the volcano and its nearly-perfect conical shape, but also showcases the artistic bravura of one of the unsung masters of classical painting in the Philippines. It exemplifies the artist’s skilled brushwork and insightful colorwork; his tonal values show incredible depth, and his palette creates a somber, nostalgic rendition of the Mayon.
