Here, BenCab turns his lens to the “home front,” assembling a tableau of Filipinas in traditional colonial garb—baro’t saya, pañuelo, and checkered tapis. The composition is masterfully static; the women are frozen in a state of suspended animation, their expressions varying from stoic resignation to quiet anxiety. The title itself, Women Waiting, imbues the work with a heavy narrative tension. It begs the question: What are they waiting for? The return of a husband from the war against the Americans? The news of a son’s fate? Or perhaps,  in the context of the Martial Law era in which it was created, a waiting for the restoration of civil liberties? \n\nBenCab’s technical prowess is on full display in the rendering of the garments. Unlike the “Sabel” figure, who represents kinetic energy and madness, the Larawan women are defined by their composure.
