In 2010, BenCab and fellow artist and photographer Melvyn Calderon decided to lend a hand and volunteer for the seabird census at the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park. Not only were they able to experience the richness and complexity of one of the earth’s most compelling ecosystems, but they were also faced with the reality of declining bird populations and biodiversity due to rapid changes in the climate and encroaching human activities. Seabirds in particular are especially affected given that their way of life is not only largely dictated by the air and the land, but the sea and ocean as well.<br /><br /> Inspired by this experience, BenCab created a series of watercolor works featuring a number of avian species found in the area. These pieces feature seabirds that call the Tubbataha Reef their home. From the Black Noddy, whose predominantly dark plumage lends it a mysterious and unique appeal, to the Red Footed Booby, who is considered one of the largest and most agile fliers in the tropics. With each piece, BenCab manages to capture not only the complexity of their features but the unique beauty of each species. The works were then exhibited in 2012 at the BenCab museum in order to promote awareness regarding the need to preserve the Bird Islet of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park in Palawan. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibit was also used to fund research and conservation efforts in the area, as well as future seabird surveys.
