A Modernist \nvirtuoso known for his distinct Cubism, Zalameda has captured the hearts\nof many with his brilliant renditions of rustic Filipino themes. A multi-award-winning \nartist, Zalameda’s stylistic genius and jet set lifestyle truly made him a sensation.\nA very well-travelled Filipino artist, Zalameda’s oeuvre eloquently reflects his \ninternational worldview — one born of experience and taste. Though Zalameda \nis often regarded for his unique cubist renderings of local and rural life, he was , \nmuch like his fellow Modernists, an experimenter at heart. Zalameda would often \nbreak out of his own comfort zone in order to tackle unfamiliar and uncommon \nthemes. Though nudes were a common subject amongst artists given their ability \nto hone and showcase an artist’s mastery of anatomy and form, Zalameda saw \nthe prevalence of the nude as a chance to subvert one’s idea of what is possible \nwith art. In this piece, Zalameda seemingly drops certain essential aspects of the \nnude that defined the genre. The work is done in his distinct cubist style which is \ncharacterized by large blocks of color layered together in order to produce lines, \nshapes, and contours. Despite his subversion of the genre, one can still feel its \nessence through Zalameda’s masterful technique. Here, emotions of intimacy \nand beauty are still palpably present despite the relative sparseness of his subject \nmatter.
