This particular \npiece showcases Malang’s unconventional interest for still life. But, instead of \nmerely applying his unique style to the subject, Malang unearths the hidden \nrealities found within the subject itself. For one, the leaves and flowers that \nconstitute them were painted impressionistically, as though Malang was \nnot so much depicting their appearance as their energy. They shoot from \ndifferent directions, but certain principles of design, such as the placement of \na central axis, provide an arrangement to what initially seem as a collection \nof unruly details. Explosive on the support, the still life features a bravura of \ncolors that overlap in exciting configurations. With that said, this work is not \nsedate beauty but extravagant bursts of creation evoked by the generous \nhand of a master at the peak of his artistry. <br /><br />\n\nTaking his cue from the spaciousness of then contemporary layout designs in \nposters, magazines, and traditional collages, Malang allows for these pockets \nof negative for the eye to rest. Such spatial provisions manage to give his \nfigurative composition a compact, balanced appearance, and avoids a \ncrowded look of excess yet projecting light hearted festiveness.
