Featuring a pair of tribal masks as the central figure of the artpiece, Manansala manages to incorporate indigenous cultural identity into his art.

The colorful zigzag patterns as well as the earthy color palette highlights folk craftsmanship and artistic motifs while the contrasting expressions of the two masks can be read as representation and exploration of identity, duality and cultural heritage.

Reflecting the historical period where artists are in the process of redefining national identity after the war, Manansala’s painting reflects the blended influence of western modernism with Filipino identity, creating a remarkable piece of art that explores topics about identities and dualities while giving a glimpse to this experimentation that would later evolve into his signature art style.
