Ocampo’s works are rife with novel imagery that seems to “oscillate, quiver, inflame and multiply,” as though biological mutations. With his early works initially reflecting social realities and the human struggle, his 1940s and 1950s were characterized by his shift toward abstraction. Rather than depicting recognizable figurative subjects, Ocampo uses colors to evoke emotional resonance, his hues doing what forms, shapes, and perspective would have in other works.

This 1956 work, though not yet in his now-recognizable abstract non-configurative style, still echoes Ocampo’s intuitive hues. Shades of orange and yellow bleed into each other, with ochre, black, and red supporting as secondary colors. His distinct color palette has given rise to a unique visual language, notably and completely Ocampo’s, even at first glance.
