Created in 1979, Onib’s signature distortion is in full display in the face of the woman he portrays, though not to the extreme with which his later works would be characterized. Here, his disfigurement was confined to the downturn slope of this lady’s eyes, the twist of her lips, and the shape of her head. Still, Portrait of A Lady synthesized Onib’s expressionistic flair, weaving a sense of this pair in this otherwise typical portrait.
