Reflecting on the sensibilities of human mortality, these artworks—The Wake (ca. 1950s) and Three Skulls (1958)—could be the artist’s exploration of existential themes through visual language. The coffin, surrounded by mourners as depicted in The Wake, and the Three Skulls, which seem to function as a classical memento mori, provide a glimpse of a different side of Juan Arellano. His ability to meditate on memory, mourning, and mortality through art demonstrated his excellence beyond architecture. His deep human themes remind his audiences about the inevitability of death and the emotional experience of loss.
