As one of the leading Filipino neo-realists, Legaspi is renowned for his cubist-inspired paintings that depict social injustice and the hardships faced by the working class. His paintings almost always center on poverty, disease, and suffering— grim and melancholic. <br />\n This untitled piece, however, presents a different facet of Legaspi’s art: an amalgamation of his cubistic and realistic folds. He made a detailed, faithful rendition of the plants, situating them against fragmented planes, with the colors varying with the touch of sunlight. Legaspi’s use of pastel on paper gave the image a textured appearance, each stroke visually distinguishable. Indeed, his mastery breathes life into every piece, regardless of the technique and medium he employs and the subject matter he portrays.
