Finding himself in the company of many ilustrados, such as Juan Luna and Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, Enriquez earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Santo Tomas, followed by his Licenciado en Derecho (law degree). He then enrolled as a painting student at the Real Academia de San Fernando. From 1879 to 1887, he lived in Paris, where he executed portrait paintings. <br />\nThis watercolor piece, like many of his works, depicts foreign themes, figures, and scenes; in this case, it appears to be a scene in a Roman toga, with a guard standing behind the figure. The man’s draped red cape is the only pop of color in this otherwise monochromatic piece. Indeed, this work is a testament to Enriquez’s influence in the early Philippine art scene, as he was the first director of the UP School of Fine Arts, where he headed the department for 17 years.
