Featuring a central figure of a seated nude female—legs folded and torso slightly hunched forward as she reads —Edades presents the female figure as natural and real rather than the usual idealized portrayal of academic nudes, focusing on the sitter’s action (showcasing the sitter’s intelligence and interest in knowledge) rather than her physical beauty. Hinting at the maestro’s rejection of strict academic realism in exchange for an expressive, human-centered approach in art, the nude became a perfect example of his modernist artistic philosophy: Art should portray real forms and experiences rather than perfected, idealized ideas.
