His brand of neo-realism has become distinct throughout the years, his sharp black hues juxtaposing with the brilliant colors he used as a primary or tertiary color. This 1980 Candle Vendor situates itself well within Antonio’s common themes. With an oeuvre full of cockfighters, peasants, and marketplaces, a candle vendor fits right in. His nearly 60-year-long career captured the Filipino life through a Modernist lens, creating an oeuvre that is both innovative and traditional.
