Tridacna gigas are considered one of the largest living bivalves in the Indo-Pacific region. But as with  any marine organism that dies, its decay creates chemical change in the surrounding sediments, causing  minerals to recrystallize and bind with other materials, producing a dense, heavy, rock-like mass. Most of the  time, this process preserves the clam’s distinctive flute ridges while altering its texture and weight, making it  appear more like a stone than a shell. They are typically spherical or oval in shape, white or cream-colored, and  porcelain-like, but lack the luster of typical pearls.
