Before he even delved into professional painting, Dalena worked as a cartoonist for the now-defunct Philippines Free Press and Asia Philippine Leader after he earned his BFA from the University of Santo Tomas in 1964. Dalena’s career in illustration, with his wild, bold, and straightforward political cartoons, left an indelible mark as it “raised the standards of editorial art in the country,” as the book Kayumanggi: Biographies of Filipino Visual Artists puts it. In this work, a man, likely elderly, sits atop a desk surface covered with fabric. His facial expression exudes an undertone of sheer disappointment or maybe indifference. Could this piece point to Dalena’s Exercise Series? Unlike those (oversaturating) traditional nude works in Philippine art, in which romantic physical elegance supersedes humanity, Dalena exhibits the raw expressiveness and unvarnished sublimity inherent in our imperfections and ephemerality. As the man reveals all his torn bareness to the viewer, Dalena shows that there is more to humanity’s beauty than meets the eye.
