His decade-long tenure included teaching decorative painting and producing exceptional portraits.

A year prior to creating this captivating watercolor piece, dela Rosa participated alongside Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo and Juan Luna in the St. Louis Exposition of 1904, an important milestone in America’s cultural expansion. His masterpiece, Planting Rice, which depicted the tranquility and serenity of the United States’ newly acquired colony, the Philippines, earned him the prestigious gold award.

In 1908, dela Rosa embarked on a scholarly expedition to Europe. He was still passionate about exploring novel approaches to portraying figurative subjects. There, he studied the works of the old masters in European museums and learned the techniques of Marcel-André Baschet at the Academie Julian. Armed with the principles of academic art, dela Rosa stressed the importance of drawing as the foundation for mastering portraiture and rendering the human form.
