His artistic signature was unique, influenced by cubism and geometric forms. This time, however, we are privileged to witness Manansala’s exceptional use of his beloved medium: watercolor.

He painted watercolor with refined composure and restraint, even though many painters grappled with its unpredictable nature. For Manansala, “the beauty of it is that it demands that you control it, it is difficult if the artist allows it to control them.” He excelled in manipulating this medium, one he had been acquainted with sinace childhood. Facing the hardships of wartime, Manansala was compelled to engage in farming and fishing to provide for his family. The countryside vistas he retreated to in Pampanga inspired his foray into genre scenes, which he mostly rendered in watercolor. His canvases are imbued with a pervading sense of tranquility and serenity, as seen in Seascape.

As a National Artist, Manansala’s innovative artistic approach and his significant impact on the evolution of modern Philippine art have solidified his lasting legacy, earning him recognition as one of the nation’s most celebrated artists.
