His artistic journey was profoundly shaped by the guiding influence of his mentor at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the renowned Vicente Manansala. In the footsteps of Manansala, Antonio skillfully captured the essence of Filipino life through his canvases, depicting scenes ranging from bustling street vendors selling an array of local goods to the spirited world of cockfighting, the tenderness of mother and child moments, and an array of other vivid urban folk images. What distinguishes Antonio’s artistic oeuvre from that of his mentor is the striking and deliberate tension he introduces between figuration and abstraction. This artistic choice manifests in the form of sharper, more angular figurations, imparting a unique dynamism to his works.
