His portraits have a quality that makes you feel quite uneasy but also strangely familiar, making them so profoundly engaging. Here, we see some of the people that populate his works, expertly rendered in pastel on paper. The lots at hand showcase Olmedo’s keen insight into human nature. His subjects have distorted and gaunt facial features, marked by the asymmetric arrangement of their eyes, nose, and mouth. Olmedo’s portraiture adheres to the Expressionist bent, which can seem unconventional to someone used to traditional portraits. He also captured the spirit of the time they were created, reflecting the intense energy of the country’s social and cultural atmosphere. So, his artworks weren’t made to romanticize the world around him, but instead to reveal the realities hidden in our collective experiences.
