Vitalis’ fortuitous encounter with Villon happened at Camille Renault’s, his close friend and patron, Parisian theater-restaurant ‘Big Boy,’ a melting pot of numerous artists bearing a diversity of styles. Vitalis would associate himself with Villon and the Groupe de Puteaux (Section d’Or), artists who traversed through the lines of Orphic Cubism, a sub-style of Cubism that focuses on lyrical abstraction and bright colors, mainly influenced by Fauvism. 1968’s Market Scene exemplifies Vitalis’ exploration of Orphic Cubism, with touches of Impressionism. By the time Vitalis created this work, he had settled permanently in Plestin-les-Greves in Brittany in 1963, a region he profoundly cherished and loved. Market Scene shows Vitalis’ “transparent prismatic style,” a term coined by eminent art critic Alice Guillermo in her critique of the artist’s work published in the catalog of Vitalis’ 1986 retrospective at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The work at hand exhibits Vitalis’ mastery of Orphic Cubism, in which forms are rendered in sheer abstraction, leaving the subject almost unrecognizable if not for their exuberant colors and imbuing them with a lyrically expressive quality. Vitalis’ impressionistic flair shows in his valuing of the subject’s essence over its intricate, distinguishable form, capturing instead the hustle and bustle of a marketplace through the bursting of colors and the jagged planes that evoke varying rhythms, movements, and energies.
