In Low Tide, the fine artist used his adept hands and unique vision to depict a humble barong-barong.

Sansó’s early landscapes bear the palpable influences of the academic school, which should come as no surprise, given his deep admiration for Fernando Amorsolo, whom he regarded as his greatest influence. The renowned National Artist was his professor at the University of the Philippines, where Sansó pursued his Fine Arts studies after World War II. However, despite Sansó’s desire to emulate Amorsolo’s style, he found it impossible. He once remarked, “There was so much grief, anguish, and sorrow in my system I could not paint beautiful sunsets and pretty dalagitas by the river.” This inner turmoil drove Sansó to create what became known as his Black Period, marked by paintings featuring skulls and grotesque forms. Even when he painted barong-barongs during this period, they came out somber and melancholic.

Sansó’s life was marred by deep personal tragedy, but he rose above it. He was able to banish the angst and trauma, eventually painting captivating landscapes, seascapes, and flowers that can only be described as works that depict the triumph of the spirit.
